Race Walking

We have a very active race walking group at K Way VOB. The race waking captain is Raymond Fuller and apart from being a pretty fast walker, he does an amazing job with all the duties of our race walking captain. Our walkers regularly place on the podium at walking events and we also take many team prizes at walking events as well.

Do not be put off by the term “Race Walking” you do not need to be an accomplished walker to take part in walks. Many runners do walking as part of their training program. There is also a trend that is becoming very popular and that is of “Health Walking”. Walking is excellent exercise and the idea of health walking is to promote walking as a form of exercise to as many people as possible.

On every Wednesday afternoon, there is a race walking time trial held at the club. This time trial is 5km and starts at 17:45.

If interested in taking part or joining the race or health walking initiatives, please mail secretary@kwayvob.co.za and we will gladly send you more information and put you in contact with the right people to help you further.

Last Month’s Walking:

Stragglers Beach Comber 10km:
Well done to Ross (2nd in the Men’s), Deborah & Trish (2nd & 3rd ladies resp). There was a great turn out with 12 of our walkers out including two new faces. Thanks for joining us Sandy & Colleen.

Leo Benning No3:
Five of our members took part and all of them walked Western Province standard times except for Hildergard who managed to better the SA standard – well done guys. We need even more of you out there.

26th January – WPA League 2 Parow:
Well done to Judy, Hildegard & Charlotte (to he best of my knowledge) who flew the flag for VOB Walkers whilst Deborah, Carlyn, Rene, Raymond & Trish were having a rest after completing the Red Hill Marathon and Classic resp.

Upcoming Events:

Philip Rabinowitz 10 km League walk:
Consider shifting your training around. Do the WALK for VOB on the 2nd February and then do your RUNNING training on the 3rd Feb. Win – win!

Walking Leagues in 2019:
9th February – 3rd League Walk, Top Form – Turfhall Park Sports Stadium
16th February – WPA Interclub’s & Race Walking Grand Prix 1
9th March – Constantia Village K-Way VOB 15km Walk
16th March – Ravensmead 10 km Walk

Upcoming Events (cont):

Visit to Spartans Time Trial – 7th February:
They start at 17:45 but allow a few minutes to walk across from the clubhouse to the start. If you have a VOB T-Shirt, please wear it so they can recognise us as visitors.

Leo Bennings (SAMA events) :
9th February – WP League meeting – Parow
16th February – WPA Multi and Open Meeting – Green Point
23rd February – WPA Masters 5, Parow.
9th March – WPA Masters 6
PLEASE NOTE that the WP Masters Championships will therefor be taking place on Saturday the 13th April 2019.
I can also confirmed that the venue for our WPMAA Champs will remain Green Point Athletics Stadium.

These events on the track are really great for improving your walking – no matter what pace you walk.
Those people going for WPA colours need to attend masters events like this. You also need to be registered with SAMA (SA Masters Athletics) if you are over 30. Follow the link below.
CRITERIA FOR WESTERN PROVINCE MASTERS ATHLETICS PROVINCIAL COLOURS

Some thoughts going forward:

Dear fellow walkers.

Phil Rabinovitz 10km walk entries have gone well – remember that it closes today, 27th Jan.

Don’t forget about the Interclub Trophy in 2019! Diarise the 16th February date now!

Incentive awards for 2019 (A PROPOSAL ONLY):
The same incentive of 5 league races + 14 time trials (+ the 1 x track or GP) BUT . . . .
To make it more attainable for walkers who focus on track or cannot make Wednesday evenings, the time trial requirements should be reduced to :
10 time trials if you earn more than 30 points in league races or
5 time trails if you earn more than 40 points.
Anyone who does over 50 points in leagues should automatically qualify.
This will encourage our performers to take part and reward them for excellence. It will also allow people who are already participating and representing the club elsewhere, to still achieve the incentive.

Socials:
So we have ticked off a few on the list below and we are open to your input.
1) Spartans monthly Time Trial – Thursday 7th February @ 17H45.
2) A few walkers have been suggesting a group walk on the weekend – we need to ID a gap.
3) We will be organising a Beginners Walking clinic where we can ALL re-visit the basics.
4) Your ideas belongs here!

Colours for Western Province:
Please note that, at the special meeting on the 20th February, it looks like new standards are to be approved. They are quite a bit tougher but appear doable.
The athlete must have:
1. Equaled or bettered the standards at least three times which may be either in the same event or a total of three times in different events;
2. participated in at least three meetings exclusively for masters athletes, (e.g. Leo Benning Challenge Series) one of which must be the current season’s WPA: Masters Championships, that is, unless he/she cannot participate due to injury or illness. Provincial Colours will be awarded after the WPA: Masters Athletic Championships, i.e. just prior to the S.A.M.A. Championships each year.

Finally – another proposal for CV15km:
As a rather small Walking Section, we all need to be taking part in this event. In order to “earn” that right, I would like to suggest that we do the seconding for the VOB helpers run. Alternatively, we all need to help either at the pre-race day registrations and any other way we walkers can contribute. As usual – IDEAS ARE WELCOMED. We really need to make our contribution, as walkers, visible in the club.

All the best

Raymond Fuller
VOB Race Walking Captain

Last Month’s Walking:
Velocity 10km:
Well done to Deborah (2nd lady) for pressurising Fundi right to the finish line. The field was small allowing Raymond a 4th overall. Hildegard, Rene and Charlotte completed the team for the day with all enjoying a good flat course in Atlantis.

Walking Incentive:
2018 done and dusted!

Upcoming Events:
Stragglers Beach Comber:
5th January 2019 – 1st League Walk for the year, Strandfontein. Let’s kick the year off with a good representation from KWay VOB.

Philip Rabinowitz 10 km League walk:
Consider shifting your training around. Do the WALK for VOB on the 2nd February and then do your RUNNING training on the 3rd Feb. Win – win!

Upcoming Events (cont):
Leo Bennings :
12th January – Leo Benning 4 Masters, Parow 5000 m
23rd February – Leo Benning 5 Masters, Parow.
Those people going for WPA colours need to attend masters events like this. You also need to be registered with SAMA (SA Masters Athletics) if you are over 30. Follow the link below.

Walking Leagues in 2019:
19th January – WPA League 1 Greenpoint.
26th Janury – WPA League 2 Parow
9th February – 3rd League Walk, Top Form
16th February – Grand Prix 1, 10 km/20 km etc.

Some thoughts going forward:
Dear fellow walkers.

While Leagues are not won or lost in January, it is the best time to get going and get off to a good start. Please try and get as many VOB’ers to join us for the first few leagues in January and February. Try entice some of your running buddies as well as those “ex-Big Walkers”.Every point counts in the league.

Let’s make a point of hanging on to the Interclub Trophy in 2019! Diarise the 16th February date now!

The Walking Incentive:
Well done to those have who have qualified for the 2018 season. It is however somewhat crazy that we don’t see some of our top walkers not qualifying for the incentive. So we need to think – “What is the purpose of the incentive?”. With input from some of the members we decided that the objectives should be as follows:
to encourage participation in the Race Walking activities by the INDIVIDUALS
to achieve better results for the CLUB in Race Walking
to recognise the above efforts in terms of both participation AND performance
With the above in mind, we would like to get inputs on how to tweak the incentive in 2019. Not to make it any easier but rather to make it more INCLUSIVE and to ensure we achieve the above objectives.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS.

Socials:
So we have ticked off a few on the list below and we are open to your input.

Before I forget – I would like to wish the entire Race Walking team a wonderful Festive Season and a Happy, Prosperous New Year. May we achieve great things in 2019 both as individuals and as a team! Let’s see how much we can grow our team next year.
Western Province Awards: I was really chuffed to get an invite for the first time this year. It was great to see all the athletics achievements being recognised and to spend time with our fellow walking friends from other clubs. It was a particularly proud occasion to accept the Inter-Club Trophy on behalf of KWay VOB. Congratulations to Hildegard, Carlyn, Deborah and Raymond on achieving Western Province colours in 2018.
